Yes, Spring has finally sprung and you know what that means , baseball , ice-cold beer (in my case ice cold Snapple, I’m only 18), hot girls and golf majors. The first major of every golf season is the historic Masters tournament held in Augusta, Georgia. It is known to be the world’s most beautiful golf course and playing a round there is definitely on my bucket list.
What’s at stake, oh nothing major, only a big fat check worth 1.8 million dollars with your name on it and the historic green jacket that is passed on to you by last years winner. This green jacket puts you in an exclusive club that many people would give their left arm for and puts you in the company of golfing legends such as Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. This is more than just a good-looking jacket it represents tradition, chivalry and history and is truly one of the coolest traditions in all of sports.
The tournament gets underway on Wednesday with the famous “Masters Par 3 competition”. This is an event where current golfers who are entered in the tournament come to face off against golfing greats in a friendly par 3 contest. It is special because a lot of the current golfers bring their families out for the day and have their kids caddie for them. It is a nice warm up and introduction to the tournament, as the golfers get ready for the grueling 72 holes that are ahead of them over the weekend.
On Thursday morning, just as the sun is rising on the first tee, three international ambassadors who represent the game of golf in a respectable way tee off to officially kick the tournement off. Unfortunately this year one of those ambassadors will no longer be there because he sadly is no longer with us. That person is the late, great Arnold Palmer. He passed away this off-season and will truly be missed by the golf community. Then the first two some of the day commences play on the course with the others following in quick succession.
Personally this is my favorite major because essentially it is a kick off to spring and good weather. Besides just take one look at the place and you have to agree that the course is absolutely drop dead gorgeous.
Players to watch:
Dustin Johnson – coming off his first major win last year , this Americam superstar has been dominating on the tour this far and will be a sure favorite to put on the green jacket come Sunday night.
Phil Mickelson – I like to make the analogy that Phil Mickleson is the ” Rodger Federer of golf”. Good old lefty is coming to the end of a career and the world is watching to see if he can squeak out one more major.
Jordan Speith – It will be very interesting to see how the young kid with an old soul responds from last years collapse. Leading on the 13th hole of the final round of last years tournament and suddenly it fell apart. True greats, which he has the potential to be can always respond to adversity and find a way to prevail.
Predicted Winner :
Jason Day – The Australian born golfer is playing his best golf right now and is looking to become the first Aussie to win the Masters since Adam Scott, who won in 2013. I believe that if Day can control his short game he should be able to run away with a better than 5 stroke win come Sunday.
