The holiday season is in full effect and you know what that means, bring on the Christmas tunes! Now there are thousands of Christmas songs out there but, the debate becomes which ones are the best. That’s where I come in. This is a list compiled of the five best Christmas songs to date and we will start with a pop star who brought flavor to a Christmas tradition.
5. Mistletoe – Justin Bieber
I know what you’re thinking, the Biebs makes this list, really? The answer is absoufreakinglutley. The tune entitled “Mistletoe”, which was released in 2011, has a pop yet soulful flow that is catchy as hell and is a song that you can truly vibe to during the holiday’s. I am not a huge Bieber fan, but he got this one right and will have me singing “shawty with youuuu” for many Christmases to come.
4. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus – The Jackson 5
This 1970 smash hit is still sung today and is a true classic. I am a huge fan of the Jackson 5, and the beauty of this song is made by the raw talent that is found from young Michael Jackson’s voice. The song also makes you think a great amount. Like realistically, what would you do if you caught Santa Claus, a man you looked up to as a kid, kissing your mother? Would you kick his jolly ass, or would you be in such shock that you would walk back up to bed without a peep. I’ve thought about this scenario many times and still have yet to come to a full conclusion. Never the less, this song is a banger and will live on as a Christmas hit forever.
3. Happy Xmas (War is Over) – John Lennon
When this song was released in 1971, it was more than just a catchy Christmas tune, it was also a symbol. The song was an accumulation of 2 years of peace activism of Lennon and his wife at the time, Yoko Ono. The song’s direct antecedent was an international multimedia campaign launched by the couple in December 1969 – at the height of the counterculture movement and its protests against America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Nearly 50 years after the song’s release date, it still gets played across the nation and even the world during the holiday season. My consensus on this song is the meaning behind the song is a little coco, but shit that tune is catchy so I’m gonna listen to it every damn Christmas and sing along like it’s my job.
2. Do They Know It’s Christmas – Band Aid
I just recently discovered this song while watching “Daddy’s Home 2” and have not been able to get it out of my head since. Although sad, as this song is ultimately about people in Africa not even knowing about Christmas and being hungry during the holiday season, it has still turned into a classic. I sometimes wonder if I should feel guilty about dancing to a song that had such a sad meaning, but then I came to discover that Band Aid raised a bunch of money to feed the African children so I have now no problem dancing my spiritual ass off. With such star power with names such as Duran, Duran and Phil Collins, it is no surprise that this song was such a success. The four songs mentioned so far although good, do not even come close to the top song on our list and I think you know what is coming.
1. All I Want For Christmas Is You – Mariah Carey
Since this smash hit was released in 1994, it has been the most popular and best Christmas song in the whole universe and it’s not even close. The combination of the catchy beat that makes you want to drop everything you’re doing and dance, sensational lyrics and brilliant vocals, this song is just the ultimate definition of Christmas. If you ask 100 people what their favorite Christmas song is, I can assure you over 60 percent would say this masterpiece. Oh, and don’t get me started on how relatable the song is. We all have that one girl/guy that we want more than anything for Christmas but just never had the balls to tell it to the world, Carey did, making this not only the best Christmas song of all time but one of the best songs of this generation.
There’s my list guys. Which ones did you agree with? Which ones were you yelling at your computer screens over? Let me know in the comments and I along with the rest of my team here at GBD wish you and your family a very happy, and healthy holiday season!
