Meet Hugh Freeze, the head coach of the Liberty Flames. Hugh is a 49-year-old man who loves football. Recently though, Hugh went through some health problems which forced him to undergo surgery to repair a herniated disk and fix a “potentially life-threatening strand of staph infection that entered his bloodstream.” With this surgery, Freeze was to be put on bed rest and be placed in a reclined position until fully healed. However, if you know Freeze, you know that this surgery would not take him away from the game he loves. With that, I present to you one of the most remarkable, courageous and inspirational stories in the history of sports.
Okay, first things first. This has to be the most ridiculous thing of all time, right? I mean, to see a grown-ass man in a hospital bed be put in a coach’s box, dressed in a headset, and asked to shout down orders to the sideline is just pure magic. This is something you only see in your dreams. If SNL doesn’t take this free material and use it for their opening skit of season 45, they are just flat out stupid. I think what amazes me most about this whole thing, is the dedication Hugh Freeze showed to his craft on Saturday afternoon. Imagine if you, the reader, who works a 9-5 office job, rolled into work one day strapped into a hospital bed. I think you would not only be greeted with an array of weird stares by colleagues, but would also be placed straight into an insane asylum.
Although this move may have been extremely ridiculous and out of left field, I respect the hell out of it. I respect in so much in fact I think we should give Hugh Freeze the Heisman Trophy. If this doesn’t qualify him as football guy of the year, I don’t know what will. What a story, what a guy and what a way to kick off the 2019 college football season. God bless this great sport.
PS: Liberty got their asses handed to them by Syracuse on Saturday, but Hugh Freeze is still my true winner at the end of the day.
