Talk about Christmas in July! Dodger fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Mookie Betts has officially become a Dodger for life.
Earlier today, it was reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan’s that LA Slugger Mookie Betts would be signing a 12 year, $365 million dollar extension with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Betts, who was traded to LA from Boston during the offseason, had one year left on his existing contract.
In terms of overall logistics of the deal, Betts contract will be valued at over $380 million dollars over the course of the next 13 years. While the language of the deal is not completed, the expectation is that Betts will be signing the massive extension in the coming days – Per Passan.
While this contract may seem ludicrous to some, Betts has proven year in and year out why he is one of the best players the game has ever seen. By the conclusion of last season, Betts had compiled an overall stat line of 176 H, 29 HR, .295 BA, 135 R (Which led baseball,) 80 RBIs, .391 OBP, .915 OPS and 40 2B. The Nashville native had also made his 4th straight All-Star game, won his 4th straight Gold Glove and won his 3rd overall Silver Slugger award.
For Red Sox fans, their worst nightmare has come into fruition. Just two years ago, Mookie had won the leagues MVP, was the face of the franchise and helped the Sox win their 3rd-word series since 2004. Now, the once Bashful Bostonian is gone, ready to start his new legacy as an LA Legend.
